First One-Day Church Built

Volunteers built the first One-Day Church in Valle Hermoso, Ecuador on June 19. The easily assembled, low-cost church is an effort to meet the needs of 200,000 Adventist congregations that do not have a church home.

Volunteers began working at 7:30 a.m. and finished construction by 4 p.m. That afternoon they brought in a platform, keyboard and 135 chairs. The building was complete with steel frame, ground anchors, metal roof, doorway, bamboo walls and even a steeple for the evening meeting the same day.

Maranatha Vice President Kenneth Weiss helped build the church, just outside of Guayaquil. "It really looks nice. And it gives people a home to worship in," he says.

The Valle Hermoso Adventist Church is a new church plant with relatively few members. But Bible workers have been studying with more than 75 people in the region, and 12 people were baptized at the church dedication on Saturday morning.

Longtime Maranatha supporter and businessman Garwin McNeilus helped launch the One-Day Church program. Carefully manufactured with cost, quality, durability and portability in mind, the structure will be easily adjusted for a variety of cultures and geographical areas. The strong steel frame will withstand termites, rust, heat, rain and most severe storms and winds. Local members construct the walls with materials typical to their region.

Funding for the One-Day Church will be a partnership between ASI, Maranatha, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Funding Opportunities for individual donors will be available soon. Visit www.maranatha.org for more information.
